Things to know before installing a solar power system

29/07/2020

The use of solar power is a sustainable development trend that is encouraged to use by governments. It contributes to saving electricity, increasing production, and business efficiency, at the same time, helping the electricity industry in reducing electricity overload, environmental protection, and climate change response.

Unlike conventional devices, solar power systems are quite complex and new which not everyone has enough experience in. The following article will provide notes to help households who are still confused about solar power systems.

Solar power is becoming a trending

What is solar power?

Solar power is energy generated from the conversion of sunlight into electricity by using solar panels or from solar power plants based on the principle of reflection to operate the water boiler that rotates the turbine to generate electricity.

Classification of solar power systems

Solar power systems are classified into two types: off-grid and on-grid.

- On-grid solar power system: This is a more commonly used electricity system due to its many economical and environmental benefits. Households will use power parallelly from the grid and solar power system. The electricity supplied from the battery, if being excess, will be transferred to the grid, and if being insufficient, the power supply will be transferred back.

- Off-grid solar power system: This system is often used for places without the connection to the power grid such as on islands or remote areas. Off-grid solar power systems require additional storage with the accumulator or lithium batteries.

Technical factors to consider

1. Solar battery technology

Currently, there are two different production technologies for solar panels: Mono and Poly. Mono panels are more efficient than Poly panels. However, due to the manufacturing of Mono panels with a complicated and expensive production process, the cost of Mono panels is much higher than that of Poly panels.

Due to the difference in manufacturing technology, Mono and Poly panels can be distinguished with bare eyes. Mono panels are usually evenly black color, while Poly panels are dark green, and the cells are closely attached together into intact large arrays.

There are many different technical factors to consider to ensure the quality of the solar power system

2. The effect of temperature

The temperature has a huge impact on the performance of solar cells. For example, conductivity decreases as temperatures rise, therefore, the higher the temperature, the lower the conversion efficiency will be.

3. Solar cell layout

Depending on the installation terrain, we will have different installation methods for power panels. However, you should pay attention that the panels should not be installed in the vertical or much steep area which affects the time of sun exposure; they should also not be installed in flat surfaces which results in stagnant water or dirt on the solar panels. The ideal mounting angle for installation is tilted from 10 to 15 degrees.

Households also need to pay attention to other factors that hinder the collection of energy from solar panels such as avoiding areas with large trees or tall buildings that block sunlight. In addition to the roof topography, attention should be paid to the structure of the roof, the rack system, as well as the panels. These panels are often designed to be used for more than 20 years, therefore in order to avoid renovating the roof, which later on will increase costs, the panels should be installed in places that are still stable or not too old. Ideally, panels should be installed on a roof with a concrete ceiling or purlin roof tile.

4. Wiring transmission line

The solar cell system needs to have a grounding and lightning protection design, all the equipment must be periodically maintained so that the system can operate stably and safely. Wires used for power transmission should be the single-core double-sheathed one to minimize short-circuits and in contact with the ground. Electrical wiring should be provided inside the protective gen tube, connected inside the protection box.

Solar power is a potential future energy application that is worthy  of household installation considerations. Besides, Tran Phu electric wire & cable products will also be a great choice for customers to use for their solar power systems.
