6 future technologies that free you from "blackouts on summer days"

13/09/2020

To build a green planet and improve power supply, the world has been researching new technology solutions to produce electricity from clean fuel sources. These technologies will help the future be free from blackouts on summer days. Solving the electricity shortage problem will be the premise to help the economy develop sustainably.

Solar thermal technologies

Solar thermal technologies will become common soon. Currently, the capacity of solar power is only 12.4 GW, but by 2050 it can be increased to 2,000 GW. Concentrated solar thermal technologies use a series of giant mirror panels to generate heat and electricity.

The technologies of producing wind power

Vietnam is having the opportunity to accelerate the wind power development program as gaining GE renewable energy technologies according to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between GE Group and the Ministry of Industry and Trade during the official visit to Vietnam of the former US President - Barack Obama in 2015. The objective of both Vietnam and GE to 2025 is to build at least 1,000 MW of capacity from wind power projects that is enough to provide

the energy for about 1.8 million Vietnamese people.

The "dream" of a world-leading wind power plant in Vietnam came true when in mid-November 2016, GE, Mainstream Renewable Power, and Phu Cuong Corporation had signed an initial cooperation agreement of Phu Cuong Wind Power Project in Soc Trang Province with the capacity up to 800 MW.

"Windy fields" provide clean electricity

It is expected that in the first phase of the project, the capacity will be 150 - 200 MW after completing the financial arrangement in 2018 which will contribute to supplementing the power supply to the South during its operation in the coming years.

Technologies for electricity generation using biofuels

The most commonly used biofuel is still ethanol, but in the future people will use organic materials with greater energy potential such as sugarcane, algae, sewage; produce fuel that is used for transportation and electricity. Currently, the world produces about 643,000 barrels of biofuels per day and by 2050, the production can increase to 3.4 million barrels a day.

The technologies of power generation from perfect biofuels

A team of scientists at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, is working on producing a perfect biofuel that doesn't pollute the environment. To create this type of fuel, they have researched the process of creating methanol - the main compound in natural gas.

Through the research, the scientists found that the mechanism for producing methane is very simple, including water and CO2 trapped in the electric current. Based on this principle, a fuel cell containing methanogens is built and when an electric charge is applied, it will create a combustion fuel that is able to neutralize carbon so it does not discharge gas into the environment.

Generating electricity from ocean waves and tides in the ocean

According to scientists' calculations, the ocean power farms in the Pacific region have great potential which can produce over 900 GW each year. Currently,  a trial project of ocean power farms, called Hywind, is run in Norway using a 2.3 MW turbine that weighs 152 tons, installed at a depth of 65m on a fixed floor under the continental shelf.

Wave power - a potential source of clean energy

Safe, completely carbon-free nuclear power generation technologies

Currently, humans can only produce 372 GW from wave power.  However, by the middle of the 21st century, it can be increased to 700 GW thanks to new generation atomic technologies, generation III + technologies using water turbochargers design; Generation IV using gravel technologies, and Generation V using mobile wave reactors.

It can be seen that there are many power generation technologies besides hydrodynamics and fossil fuel production. In the future, Vietnam will undoubtedly take new steps to bring these electricity generation technologies into operation, to improve living standards and serve production to help sustain economic growth.
